It is the beginning of a new year and many of us use it as an opportunity to evaluate our lives and decide what changes we want to make as we move into the new year. You may be rolling your eyes at the thought of “resolutions.” While on social media, I witness plenty of people who embrace it and many others who make fun of the idea.
Whether or not you are into making resolutions, Danielle LaPorte, author and speaker, recommends thinking about how you want to feel when considering goals. If the feeling that comes to mind is “peaceful” then working at your high stress job 12 hours a day and then coming home and crashing on the couch and falling asleep in front of the tv is not going to be very satisfying, right? So maybe instead you make a shift and say that your goal is to meditate in the morning before work and to go to a yoga class Saturday mornings. Will that move you towards a feeling of peacefulness? Heck yeah, much quicker than the first scenario.
Thinking of your goals in this way can also give you a ton of flexibility. If my original goal was to join the gym but when I think about the feeling goal it is to feel strong, then I may realize that it’s not just about going to the gym but maybe instead I decide to take a martial arts class and look into opportunities with Habitat for Humanity. All of those ideas can certainly give you a feeling of being strong.
So, ask yourself the question of “how do I want to feel?” and then list some ideas of what you can do that will help you to feel that way.
Happy New Year! I hope 2018 is a terrific year for you!
